Encouraging Love and Empathy Through Paws and Purpose: Introducing Luna the Service Dog: A Superhero in Training
As parents, educators, and ministry leaders, one of our greatest responsibilities is equipping the next generation with the truth of Christ and encouraging empathy to understand the struggles of others. I am thrilled to announce the release of my new children’s picture book, Luna the Service Dog: A Superhero in Training, a resource designed to help families navigate difficult conversations about others' disabilities and the vital role of working animals. The book focuses on the training of service animals, such as Luna and her training partner, Luke, a beautiful black Labrador retriever.

Following the journey that began in Luna, My Superhero Sidekick, this new 40-page story sees Luna, my loving German Shepherd, head off to “doggie school.” Luna isn't just learning to sit and stay; she is training to become my real-life superhero sidekick, ministering to my personal needs. Aimed at early readers ages 4 to 8, the book uses Luna’s training to introduce children to the daily realities of people with disabilities and the service animals who assist them.
At Christ Centered Solutions, we frequently minister to individuals who carry many unseen burdens and traumas. It can be difficult to explain these invisible and visible conditions to young children without causing confusion or fear. Luna the Service Dog: A Superhero in Training bridges that gap. By focusing on Luna's training, the story provides parents, Sunday School teachers, and counselors with an age-appropriate, compassionate framework to discuss the mental, emotional, and spiritual health needs of others.
Beyond the emotional lessons, the book serves as a practical educational guide. With expert contributions from professional dog trainer Tamara McKinney, the story teaches children proper etiquette for interacting with working dogs in public spaces and all dogs. Kids learn why it is important not to pet or distract a service animal while it is "on the job" helping its handler.
Luna the Service Dog: A Superhero in Training is now available in premium-color paperback and digital ebook formats. Please consider sharing Luna’s journey with the young readers in your life and help foster a more understanding and empathetic world for those navigating myriad life challenges. You can find your copy on Amazon or at www.rodwestbooks.com. If you’re interested in the first Luna book, Luna, My Superhero Sidekick, or the companion coloring book, you can find them on my author website or Amazon.
Blessings,
Dr. Rod West
