Why Pastors Need Long-Term Care

There are so many great weekend retreat options for Christians. But what about the weary pastor who needs rest and healing beyond what can be accomplished in an extended weekend?

The biblical case for sabbaticals

God commanded ALL Israelites to let their land lie unplowed and unused every seventh year (Exodus 23:10-11).  Because they were an agricultural society, this would mean that every seventh year would essentially be a welcomed break from work, a time of rest and refreshment.

God still intends for us to take breaks from our work to reconnect with him, with ourselves, and with others. Jesus told us that the first and greatest commandment is to "love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind" (Matthew 33:37). And he said that the second is like it, to "love your neighbor as yourself" (Matthew 22:39).

The Scientific Case for Sabbaticals

The command to let the land rest was for everyone. There is even a growing movement today of people taking long-term time away from regular jobs. People who take sabbaticals report positive benefits that include a refreshed sense of purpose, increased confidence and overall better mental health and wellbeing just to name a few.

But those benefits can't be achieved in a weekend. It is far better to give pastors the opportunity to take up to one year away from ministry work than to risk watching them burn out and leave ministry work altogether.
